Apex Inclusion has been based within Levenmouth Academy in Fife since 2012, supporting many different pupils for extended periods of time to allow them to access the curriculum at a level and pace suited to them. It has been exciting to be part of a rights respecting school, whereby the values and ethos of the school are so infectiously inclusive, you can’t help but be part of its daily hive of activity.
We deliver the following services in Levenmouth Academy:
Alternative to Exclusion is more reactive in nature, mirroring the process and formality of an out of school exclusion, but offering a period of reflection for restorative and behavior change work, whilst remaining abreast of peers by continuing to access the curriculum. A2E is not a ‘soft’ option and often young people report it is more difficult to come into school and address what’s happened, rather than create space between themselves and the incident before returning to school harbouring thoughts, behaviours and anxieties that they had either displaced or forgotten about. Quite often exclusion leads to a cycle of behavior that can be destructive to the young person, their peers, parents/carers, school staff and overall morale/culture of an establishment. That said, we understand and provide support where there is no other option than to exclude. In these circumstances, the RE:SET facility would be used as a means of reintegration to the school with a focus on reparation and promotion of self-regulation for smooth transition back to classes.
