Working as part of a Public Social Partnership (PSP), Apex Scotland delivers Shine – a mentoring service for females involved in the criminal justice system.
Shine women’s mentoring is a voluntary intensive mentoring service providing both practical and emotional support to women who are:
- serving a sentence of less than 4 years not subject to statutory supervision
- on remand
- at a high risk of breaching their Community Payback Order (CPO)
The post requires working between prison establishments, with wide coverage of the Scottish Borders area. The service aims to support and assist women from an offending background to help themselves to develop their own personal identity, skills, knowledge and abilities. We now require a member of staff to deliver this service.
The post is funded until March 2022 and we are hopeful of extension. The successful candidate will work on a one to one basis with women of all ages who may face multiple barriers to progression, providing advocacy when required and through signposting to specialist agencies. The post will cover the Borders area and will require some home working and sharing offices with partner agencies. Equipment will be provided.
Experience of working with service users to help maximise their potential and an understanding of the issues facing women are essential. The post will involve working within a prison setting as well as in the community therefore knowledge and experience of working within a prison establishment would also be an advantage. A current driving licence or access to a means of transport is essential as the post will cover a significant area. Knowledge of the Scottish Criminal Justice system is desirable but not essential.
We welcome applications from individuals with lived experience of/or experience of working with those who have experienced psychological trauma such as, poverty, homelessness, criminal justice, domestic violence, addiction/recovery, looked after/care, carer/young carer services and this highlights the value we know that lived experience brings to service delivery and design.
In view of the nature of this post and the requirement to work with vulnerable adults, this post holder will be required to join the relevant PVG scheme.

Rate of pay: Salary Scale: £20,992 – £23,233 pro rata
