Dance Music Initiative, or D.M.I, is a contemporary and innovative group for the U-Turn 16-25 year old clients in Stranraer. The project offers a unique way to engage with young people through a medium they are passionate about. Basic audio production and turntable skills are at the forefront of the programme, but issues such as drug and alcohol awareness, and sexual health are also addressed, heightening awareness and reducing risk. Participants also obtain a holistic view of the music scene and the opportunities it offers to engage and inspire them to a positive future.
The importance of a good work ethic, punctuality, attention to detail, computer and communication skills are all transferrable job related skills the participants can improve in the group. The young people find each session engaging and structured and opportunities for collaboration will arise as each participant grows in confidence. One client told us “There’s nothing else like the D.M.I. group for us around here, I can learn new skills while having a good time with pals”. Involvement in D.M.I. gives youths a positive objective, with attention to key issues such as drug awareness. The group allows young people to acknowledge that their personal actions can contribute to a healthier and more inclusive community.
